Myth
Sloths were named after the deadly sin of being “slothful”, and they were unceremoniously given the title of being the world’s laziest animal. That is a hard reputation to bounce back from!
However, as we have already described above, sloths don’t actually sleep that much. They are slow and careful – which has tricked scientists into wrongly believing that they just sleep all day.
Being slow is far from lazy.
Strategy
Sloths have the slowest metabolic rate of any non-hibernating land mammal. This sometimes makes people think that they are lazy, unmotivated, and not very good at what they do.
In fact, being slow is an incredibly successful strategy for survival: sloths have survived on this planet for almost 64 million years!
Purpose
“Every move a sloth makes is with purpose, which is more than most of us can say about 90% of the time.”
